List API Contracts: Design Pagination, Sorting, and Filtering Together

bibi45

Stable list APIs make dashboard tables and data exports more reliable.

The API contract should define pagination parameters, default sorting, the maximum page size, filter fields, and whether the response includes a total count. For large datasets, count can be expensive. Consider whether an estimated count or cursor pagination is more appropriate.

Sorting fields must come from an allowlist. Never insert field names supplied by a client directly into SQL. Validate filter types, ranges, and permissions in the query layer as well.
